The Airsoft Movement
Airsoft Australia's primary goals are to legislate the personal, private and rental use of Airsoft within Australia and continue to build the largest Australian Airsoft community.
We aim to address public sentiment and portray a safe and responsible outlet for members, enthusiasts, media and Government officials to discuss all related Airsoft topics. We also aim to prove that from an economical perspective, Airsoft would inject revenue into the economy and prove a viable, sustainable sporting apparatus for Australians of all demographics.
We believe a strong, large Airsoft community is paramount to the movement. It allows like-minded individuals to put forward their views and knowledge, their network, collaborate and in turn, work towards and effective method in achieving our goals. The community is what drives this movement and helps create awareness for this great sport.
Airsoft Australia's end result, if successful, will look like this;
1. Allow Airsoft ownership on a private level for Practical Shooting/IPSC/Target Shooting and Skirmishing.
2. Allow Airsoft ownernship on a Shooting/Pistol Club level for Safety Training, Rental and Practical Shooting application
3. Allow Airsoft ownership on a field/scenario level (i.e. Paintball Field) for Rental to participate in Skirmishing
4. Allow Airsoft ownership on a private level, without a Firearms License, for Theatrical/Film-making application (rendered inoperable if required)
Points 1, 2 and 3 will be addressed by seeking amendments to the Firearms Act (both State and Federally) whereby Airsoft issue gets re-classified and personal ownership is governed by a Firearms License, identical to currently instated Category A/B and H classes.
This will involve talking with MP's, industry experts, media and the Firearms Working Policy Group (FWPG) in putting forward a proposal that adopts a safe and rational initiative for permitting Airsoft ownership.
Point 4 will be addressed to a model similar to South Australia whereby any Airsoft issue under 180fps does not require a Firearms License, rather a Police Permit and modification in accordance to Customs requirements.
Importation of Airsoft issue would fall under the identical protocols to current live-firing models whereby an Arms Dealer and/or Licensed Importer would process any import requirements and a PTA (Permit to Acquire) would be required to accrue personal ownership.
Given the current stigma of Australian "gun culture" and worldwide terrorism concerns, the type of Airsoft Issue we propose falls into Category A, B and H firearms. Essentially, this means semi-automatic for handguns and bolt, lever, or pump action for longarms (modifications for Skirmish operations similar to Paintball if permissable). Military and Assault Rifle replicas's are not part of our plan as this is a governing factor as to why Airsoft is not permitted on our shores. Pushing for these types of Airsoft issue has had adverse affects in the past and stalled advancements in Airsoft legislation. Additionally, we would seek two-tone and/or clear manufacture of Airsoft issue with red-tipped barrels that minimises the resemblance to live-firing firearms.
The concept is that by addressing public sentiment, concerns and working with currently instated firearm regulations, we believe the approach has credibilty and room for negotiation without taking drastic measures that could potentially favour one form of Airsoft over others.
At the end of the day, it's all forms of Airsoft we aim to make a tangible reality.
A lot of you are aware of John C. Hanlon and his efforts in legislating this sport. We have tried contacting him but have not had any luck as yet. We felt the direction and approach he had was not neccesarily an effective one. We need to build the Airsoft community, build our forum and spread our presence online through outlets such as Facebook and Twitter.
This is not a one man operation. Everyone needs to be involved and have their views put forward. This is a purely community driven project
